Our History

Set on the foot of Kilima Kiu Hill, (meaning 'that hill', sometimes 'black hill'), one and a half hours' drive from Nairobi, is an old manor that belonged to Sir Frank Joyce. Back in 1911, Frank Joyce arrived in Kenya and settled in the rugged country side of Malili close to the Kilima Kiu hill. He soon met and married his love, Mary Early, and together they settled and started ranching in this very home we now call the “Kilima Kiu Manor.” The couple shared merry laughter and deep secrets, some of which may be revealed to you during the 'bubbly' breakfasts or 'twisted' sundowners.

The ranch grounds have lived since then and with every new owner a breath of fresh air and activity is infused. From ostrich rearing to cattle ranching and even dairy farming, this manor has been home to clotted cream, raspberry jam and warm scones.

Today, the Kilima Kiu Manor is one of the most charming boutique country homes in Africa. So much has been written about this home in Kenya's history books, notably, "Out in the Midday Sun" by the late Elspeth Huxley. The wooden interiors whisper of its rich history, telling the story of survival in a wild savanna wasteland before its taming. Each of the seven rooms is filled with a warmth and elegance that transcends time, reaching back years to the pre-colonial age. It is here that we promise to give you a relaxing and unforgettable getaway.
